Fairtrade develops innovative, impact-oriented projects, funded by donors, to support our mission.
Fairtrade partners with governments, NGOs and the private sector to develop projects in line with our mission to empower producers and promote fairer trading conditions.
These projects are producer led, impact oriented and time limited. They range from projects that test new approaches for farmers to improve their business and incomes, to projects raising consumer’s awareness of sustainable consumption and production.

European Commission Framework Partnership Agreement
“Unlocking the Power of Producers and Workers to Drive Inclusive Trade and Development through Fairtrade” is a multi-stakeholder four and a half year project (2019-2023) with the objectives of strengthen the governance of the Fairtrade system, promote inclusion and efficiency within the network, increase advocacy influence and improve internal capacities to better support producers and workers around the world.
European Commission Development Education and Awareness Raising Programme
‘Trade Fair, Live Fair’ is the ambitious project of the fair trade and ethical fashion movements across Europe to join forces to foster more resilient livelihoods for the producers and workers behind many of the products that European citizens consume.
European Commission SWITCH-Asia Programme: Switching India's consumption to fair and sustainable goods
This project aims to tackle the challenge of sustainable consumption in one of the fastest growing economies in the world, India. It builds on Fairtrade’s work over the past 20 years of influencing consumers, businesses, schools & universities, local authorities, workplaces and other relevant stakeholders to make more sustainable purchasing choices that benefit the lives of farmers and workers in developing countries.
To develop an appropriate tool that empowers farmers to administer their farms as a small-scale enterprise and optimize profitability, based on records of actual yields, production costs and sales income. This tool should enable farmers to calculate current and potential farm profits in varying scenarios of applied good agricultural practice and product diversification, compare results against productivity benchmarks and make well-informed business decisions. Enhanced producer capacity to provide accurate data on cost of production and farm income will in turn enable income monitoring in order to establish current income baselines and measure progress towards living incomes, strengthen Fairtrade price reviewing processes, as well as producers' bargaining position towards industry partners.
The main objective of the project is to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Fairtrade producers’ health, wellbeing and economic sustainability by: Providing immediate relief and support prevention of further spread of the pandemic on at-risk producers and their wider communities in Latin America, Africa and Asia; Helping producers recover from economic losses due to COVID-19. This includes supporting them to maintain and diversify their supply chain relations, and ensure business continuity, food security and income generation.
Bridging the income gap for cocoa farmers in Cote d’Ivoire: a Living Income learning project
The main objective of the project is to test and validate the assumptions underlying the Fairtrade Living Income Reference Price model as a key component within a holistic living income approach, through the introduction of a farm management tool. In order to validate the model, supply chain partners are to implement a range of activities to support farmers to improve their farm productivity towards the target values for cocoa yields, crop diversification and cost efficiency, as established in the model, while the cocoa is sold at the Living Income Reference Price.
The project's objective is to promote adoption of sustainable production in India’s cotton textiles sector so it becomes mainstream. This will include creating an enabling environment for this to thrive, supporting green business development, and improving access to green finance.
The Fairtrade Ambassador Program was created with the aim to strengthen producer-led advocacy as well as the system’s capacity to bring the voice of producers to a global level through lobbying, public mobilization events and campaigns.
Emergency relief and resilience fund to mitigate food and energy price crises
The main objective of this project is to build the resilience of agricultural production systems to future shocks and stresses (based on the triple nexus of food, energy and finance), by investing in resilient food systems that protect smallholder producers and workers
Delivering Impact for Farmers and Workers through Outcome-Based Programmes
We acknowledge that Fairtrade cannot achieve its vision through certification alone. For this reason, we complement our certification services with a range of tailored programmes. To date, we have implemented more than 150 projects and we are leveraging this experience to scale up and deliver more innovative and system-changing interventions, to deliver maximum impact for farmers and workers across the world.
